First of all… Don’t bother submitting to hundreds of article directories. Just hand pick around 20 high page rank well known sites… It takes far too long to submit to 500, even with auto fill software. So stick with the best 20 directories.
Now I have seen no evidence of duplication punishment. This seems to have been touted by some of the guru’s selling you the software to solve it. So don’t even worry about changing the article into 20 different ones… it’s a complete waste of time.
The most important thing is the article title and this should be at least 4 words.
This is because you need to go after the long tail key phrases.
E.g. If you had a site selling an ebook on solar power then ideal key phrases for your articles would be:
advantages and disadvantages of solar power
how does solar power work
solar power outdoor christmas lights
These key phrases were found simply by using the free keyword tool at wordtracker, which can be found at:

The longer the phrases the more chance you’re gonna have an article getting on the first page of the search engines to provide you with good traffic.
