Beauty, fruit, and attraction for birds – Persimmon trees have many advantages. Originating in China, the persimmon tree spread in popularity throughout Asia over the centuries. Around 1800 these exotic trees were brought to California where the climate proved ideal for their cultivation as persimmons do best in deep and fertile soil and a mild weather. Two types do particularly well in California: the Hachiya, which is very prolific, and the Kaki, called Oriental Persimmon.
If you can grow a persimmon in your area you can enjoy this tree all year. Good for a garden or planted as a small shade tree, the persimmon is not all about fruits. If fall is mild, the leaves turn to gilded tints, revealing ripening fruit previously hidden behind them. By winter the leaves vanish, exposing the last clusters of persimmons on twisted branches. If you do not live in a zone that allows you to grow persimmons, buy a few at the store in season – September through January: this lovely fruit deserves attention from anyone looking for a seasonal delicacy.
